Sometimes, what's close at hand is easy to ignore. The first two photographs taken in our backyard are about the way light reveals tones and textures. The third is from a place I've often photographed from the other side of the road looking east toward the ocean. I took this picture at lowish tide with the sandbar quite our of the water. I was standing on a bridge, and the rock wall with bushes was in the foreground.

I've finally gathered the wherewithal to take my camera out and make some photographs. Like seeing an old friend when you've been among strangers, I went back to Black Rock Beach where I've often had a good outing as what's there is so inherently interesting. Here are five from the roll of ten that I like. Just to see how they'd look, I toned the bottom two a slight sepia. I'm still not sure, so I'm going to leave them as they are now.

It's now autumn, and I'm still in a photographic slump, but I did visit Kingsley Plantation again last week and brought back a few images of tabby slave cabin ruins and one scene from Palmetto Road which is on the way there.

I've not posted here for a month or so, but yesterday (August 17th) I resolved to take my camera for a ride to Marineland. It was an opportunity to photograph the surf against the coquina rocks at a little bit slower shutter speed than the meter called for using an ND filter. That shutterr speed was 1/8th second which was enough to capture the splash against the rocks, but not so slow as to totally blur those waves. Of the ten exposures I made with my Pentax 67, 55mm lens, and variable ND filter I liked these two.

This image was also on the roll of film from a previous trip a month ago.

The past....

Round Lake is about a mile and a half from where we used to live in NY. Over the years, there, I made quite a few photographs of it in all seasons and weather. All were posted on this blog around the time I made them, but I decided to present them again here as a body of work. Almost all were printed in my traditional darkroom that I no longer have now that I live in Florida, but I still have the equipment should anyone offer me free access to a space I could recreate as a darkroom! ;)))))

I had not been to Dutton Island Preserve for quite a while until yesterday (May 14th). I made all of these photographs with a wide angle lens (a 45mm that is equivalent to a 24mm on a 35mm camera) that I've had for years but rarely use.

Back to Blackrock Beach again, but with a different lens...my 45mm which is like a 24mm on a 35mm camera. These seem pretty good to me:

ARTIST STATEMENT

I make the picture; you do the rest. What you bring to viewing an image is unique, and to suggest what I think you should or might bring would be inauthentic. The only manipulations I use are those of traditional wet darkroom practice which can be emulated with reasonable fidelity in Photoshop Elements, Lightroom or similar software.

Continuing with the traditional processes of photography in an age in which technology has become ubiquitous there still remains a niche for those of us who embrace the way of the undigitized, unplugged, and hand made.

Usually Close to Home

Most of the photographs here made before September of 2013 were made in the Hudson Valley of New York State. As much as I might want to visit a host of other iconic and exotic locales, I have loved where I've lived, and have found it visually stimulating and satisfying. But, since September of 2013, I have been exploring the region of northern Florida, and southern Georgia where we have moved to stay. The ocean is close by, as are pristine salt marshes, abundant trees that are new to me, many draped in Spanish moss, perpetually changing beaches and dunes, and extraordinary skies. It will be a new body of work. I'm eager to get started.

As to their mostly being monochrome, the venerable photographer, teacher and writer David Vestal offered that he listened to radio because the images were better, and photographed in black and white because the colors were better. I agree completely about the photographs.
