For reasons that no longer apply, I have been unwilling to venture out with the camera late in the day.  Being retired, now, I've begun to make some forays to Little Talbot Island SP at around 6PM that offer both a quality and direction of light that is really attractive. Here are three scenes from that place taken on September 12th.  (P67, 55mm, Red 25A, Delta 100)

Thankfully, in addition to readily available beaches lots of people use for recreation, there also several nearby state parks that remain semi-wild.  Little Talbot Island is one of them, and it's in the process of recovering from last years hurricane that decimated dunes and sea oats.  Much is cordoned off, but it's easy for the camera to ignore the barriers allowing the lens to peer beyond them.  (Film)

If it were not for the roots here, I'd have liked to spread a blanket and rest under the tree.  It's not very Florida like which I think is terrific!

Though I think a lot of the fish that are caught here do end up on a plate, I suspect those thrown back for whatever reason do not fare well.  Catch and release seriously harms the fish. This guy was having a nice peaceful morning, and I hope he caught himself a nice dinner! 

Sometimes, there is a marvelous photograph sitting right outside one's front door. 

Our back yard is a nice open space that is bordered by a forest of trees and vines.  The trees are mostly firs and loblollys; the vines are nameless to me.  There are also a few ferns that I've always enjoyed seeing against a much darker ground.  This is one I particularly like.

I've been on a brief hiatus from photographing.  Today, I looked at the back of the yard and saw this which appealed to me enough to take out the camera gear. I'm sure it's just a random, confusion of dead branches to many if not most, but to me there is a graceful design  here.

When it's difficult to get away from home, it's a good idea to look around and find something interesting to photograph where home is!  This is a loblolly bay tree with bloom behind our house  photographed in late afternoon. There had been recent rain though you can't see any drops on the leaves.  (MF Film)

I went to Marineland beach to photograph the coquina rocks, but these little trees and the clouds were more interesting at that time.  Actually, the tall plants are not trees at all, but century plants or agave Americana which can grow to 30 feet at the end of their life cycle. The spiky leaves near their base are also agave plants which will someday get very tall.  (MF Film)

It's fun to revisit old images that kindle nostalgia for places I love and miss a lot.  Here are several of those from Orange County, NY where I lived until moving to Florida in 2013.  They are from 2009 and 2010 in Harriman State Park and beside the Wallkill River.  (The Wallkill is one of a minority of rivers that flow from south to north.)  MF Film

 

I don't mind getting up early, in fact I actually prefer to, but it's been a very long time since I drove to the beach for sun-up which I did today.  There were more people there than I expected, but I shouldn't have been surprised as it was very pleasantly warm and inviting.  (MF Film)

There is muck, and anti-muck. When you step in the former, there's the latter to clean you up a bit. Of course, shoes will be sacrificed, but mud happens!  These two photographs were taken near St. Augustine, and up the coast a few miles from Vilano Beach.  I much preferred the anti-muck!  (MF Film)

Sometimes, when working on a couple of photographs, one or two others may get inadvertently ignored.  This is one of those.  I'm not sure when I took the negative for this, but it was a while ago.  Here it is now, though, and I'm glad I found it.  (MF Film, Deep Yellow #15 filter)

I return to Pumpkin Point quite often.  Low tide reveals acres of oyster beds, and Spanish moss drapes the branches of ancient trees.  (MF Film)

There are fairly typical scenes in Florida that do not involve flamingos.  They often do involve palm trees and retention ponds.  And, clouds!!!  Here are several views that I hope are not cliches..  (MF Film)

f8 and be there is an ancient photographer's adage, but luck matters a lot even when you are there.  And, it was f22 for me plus an orange filter and a polarizer.  (MF Film)

A marsh can be interesting and sometimes beautiful, but as it's a vast plain, it gives the sky a chance to show off!  (MF Film)

Since moving here, it's been easy to find beauty in the ocean and marshes especially when they're augmented by spectacular skies with dramatic clouds.  These photographs, however, are evidence that the path through the forest jungle can be beautiful as well.  (MF Film)

 

Moving away from the coast and the ocean and marshes, the springs in northern Florida are particularly attractive. The water is crystal clear and a constant 72 degrees all year long.  These two photographs are from Ichetucknee Springs which, along with a number of others, feeds the Santa Fe River.   (MF Film)

Fearsome Symmetries!  There are acres of these bare trees near the ocean.  I love their complexity and accidental symmetries.  If the ground were not littered with palmettos, I'd have made many more images here!  (MF Film)

Before I arrived at the site where the two photographs in my previous post were made, I stopped beside the road for this one.  Salt marshes at low tide are really interesting and vary a lot.  The oysters are abundant at all of them!  (P67, 45mm, #15 deep yellow filter on Delta 100)

There are places that are not only interesting and or beautiful, but also subject to continual change.  The Ft George River inlet I've photographed quite a few times is one of them for me.  Time of day, what's in the sky, high or low tide and point of view all make a difference and allow repeated visits.  Yesterday was a twofer at low tide with a dynamic sky.  (MF Film)
